Minehead United Reformed Church is about to enter a new phase in its 100 + year’s history. With a great step of faith, we have undertaken a building project that will enable us to offer community projects to make the love of Jesus visible in the community. In accordance with Jesus’ teaching, and the example He gave us, we strive to help those in need, not just those within the church family, but outside it too. This building project will enable us to be an outward focused church as we open up our refurbished site for the benefit of those who live around us. As we share in this way, we hope to show the love of Jesus, not just talk about it! With the opening of our new Bancks St. Centre, we will enter a new era of life together.
The Church is already active and encourages both church and community activities usually centred on the Hall. The premises are used by groups across a broad spectrum from young people activities (two uniformed groups) through educational programmes and those involving disadvantaged or disabled groups. The current limitations on ease of access for such groups are limiting progress to development of a wider interface with community. With the improved access and associated facilities provided by the FACELIFT PROJECT we will be able to strengthen active links with local (over 50) residential housing and care homes and provide respite activities on the premises alongside our existing fellowship and community link programme. The food prepared on the premises already enhances the outreach of the church through a friendship meal currently on a monthly basis. An instructive Craft group involving both disabled and others is developing on a weekly basis.
So where will our new premises take us? It is hoped that as well as improving facilities for our existing users, the upgrade will allow us to become an all age community centre. Whilst we have not got the personnel to run all of these activities ourselves, our site would enable us to facilitate activities run by others outside the church.
All of these activities will enable our site to be an all year round, all age community centre. They will show what we stand for, and how we want to share the love that God has for each one of us, with our neighbours. Our Open Door Centre will be a welcoming and caring place that is alive with activity and love.
