We are delighted to be a part of this initiative,
so what is a Street Pastor?

A Street Pastor is exactly what it says on the lid. It is a pastor, a caring person, on the streets! Our plan in Minehead is to have at least 16 trained Street Pastors in Minehead. Each one is asked to do one Saturday night per month. Therefore we aim to have 4 Street Pastors in Minehead Town Centre between the hours of 10.00pm and 2.00am each Saturday night of the year. Their task will be to care for, listen to and serve what is called the Night Time Economy, the people who use the pubs and clubs of Minehead or who just walk the streets at that time of night. People can often put themselves in vulnerable situations and get into (or create) all sorts of trouble. It may surprise you to learn that the Police are very active in our town centre at that time of night. We hope that one of our main outcomes, as has been demonstrated by Street Pastor schemes in other parts of the country, is a reduction in late night, drink fueled violence, crime and disorder. For me the wonderful thing about such a scheme is that it gets the Church into the orbit of a group of people (often younger people) who otherwise we would never encounter. It is often referred to as a 'Presence Ministry', bringing the presence of Jesus, through our presence and our prayers, onto our Streets. It must make a difference.
Minehead Street Pastors Initiative (Minehead SPI) is licensed by the Ascension Trust (AT) and is part of the national network of Street Pastor Initiatives. It was established by and continues to be supported by all the Christian Churches in Minehead.

The training programme concludes around the end of January 2011 and we have a programme of other things in Feb and March so we have a provisional Commissioning event planned for Saturday evening 26th March 2011 after which the Street Pastors will go onto the streets for the first time.
